The road from Kozhikode climbs through nine hairpin bends before arriving at Lakkidi, one of the most recognisable entrances to Wayanad. Set close to the crest of the Thamarassery pass, the locality overlooks the dramatic folds of the Western Ghats: wooded ridges, deep valleys and small streams line the approach. Kerala Tourism places Lakkidi at roughly 700 metres above sea level and about five kilometres from Vythiri. The nearby viewpoint is associated with expansive views down the mountain route, and the Chain Tree gives the area a distinctive place in Wayanad folklore. Lakkidi is not only a scenic stop: the road serves residents, plantations, educational institutions and travellers moving between the coast and the upland towns.
